Cairn's response to the cancellation of River City.
We are most concerned to learn that, after more than twenty years, BBC Scotland has taken the decision to cancel Scotland’s only continuing drama, River City. The final series will be aired in autumn 2026.
This is a decision that will have a huge impact across our industry. River City employs and has employed huge numbers of creatives, actors, technicians and ancillary staff for over two decades. Jobs will be lost. Opportunities will be lost. Perhaps most importantly, regular representation of Scottish cultural identity on screen will be lost. If River City ends it is vital that the £9 million budget be ring-fenced for Scots-based projects with an emphasis on Scotland based talent and expertise. It is also crucial that the BBC's pledge of a £95 million investment in drama from Scotland over the next three years is upheld.
Cairn are currently reaching out to BBC Scotland to clarify the facts. Our thoughts are with our colleagues at River City at this unsettling time.
